The Combined Towage and Ship Handling Course was compiled in accordance with the principles and best practices promoted by the British Tugowners Association (BTA), with a strong emphasis on safety, communication, risk management, and the effective integration of tug operations into ship handling activities. The course provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the capabilities and limitations of modern tugs, the forces generated during towage operations, and the importance of maintaining situational awareness throughout all phases of an operation.
Throughout the course, participants develop practical skills in planning and executing a range of towage operations, including harbour manoeuvres, berthing, unberthing, and emergency response scenarios. Particular focus is placed on the application of effective Bridge Resource Management principles, clear communication between the pilot, ship’s bridge team, and tug masters, and the identification and mitigation of operational risks. Exercises encourage participants to apply sound judgement, maintain appropriate safety margins, and adapt plans in response to changing conditions.
The course also reinforces the importance of a proactive safety culture and the use of industry-recognised procedures to prevent incidents. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical simulation exercises, participants gain a deeper appreciation of the complexities of ship handling with tug assistance and the critical role of teamwork in achieving safe and efficient outcomes. Successful completion of the course demonstrates an understanding of BTA guidance and the ability to apply best practice towage techniques in a professional maritime environment.
