Ship Handling (Conventional)

Effective ship handling is a fundamental skill for safe and efficient vessel operations. Learning, building on and improving to use conventional maneuvering equipment—such as single or twin shaft propulsion, all rudders variations, and bow or stern thrusters—allows mariners to control a vessel safely and effectively in a wide range of conditions.

Understanding how propulsion, rudder forces, and thrusters interact enables bridge teams to maneuver with precision during critical operations such as berthing, unberthing, confined water navigation, and low-speed maneuvering. Continuous training, refreshing and practice help operators develop the awareness and confidence needed to anticipate a vessel’s response and apply the correct control inputs.

Improving ship handling skills not only enhances operational efficiency but also increases safety, reduces fuel consumption, reduces stress on equipment, and minimises the risk of incidents involving the vessel, port infrastructure, or surrounding traffic.
