Command Assessments
Our Command Assessment Service is designed to support the safe and effective transition of experienced officers into ship command by providing a professional evaluation of leadership capability, decision-making performance, and operational judgement in realistic maritime scenarios.
Command is one of the most demanding responsibilities in shipping. Our assessment programme measures not only technical competence but also the human factors that determine command success — including communication, authority management, and risk awareness under operational pressure.
Assessments are conducted using structured scenario-based exercises, discussion-based evaluation, and, where appropriate, simulation environments that replicate real-world operational challenges such as congested traffic situations, restricted visibility, and emergency response events.
Aligned with leadership and safety culture principles promoted by the International Maritime Organization and national guidance such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the service supports organisations in maintaining high standards of command competency.
